Ask most people what they would build a home with and they're likely
to say wood. Of course, that's no surprise: Wood has been the choice
of homeowners and builders for centuries. Wood is strong, durable,
affordable and, best of all, incredibly beautiful.

3. Woods Durability and Safety

There's no reason a wood structure can't last virtually forever - or,
at least hundreds of years, far longer than we may actually need the
building. With a good understanding of how to protect wood from decay
and fire, we can expect today's wood buildings to be around for as
long as we wish.

The American Wood-Preservers' Association (AWPA) is a nonprofit organization
which is responsible for promulgating voluntary wood preservation
standards. AWPA Standards are developed by its technical committees
in an open, consensus-based process that involves individuals from
all facets of wood preservation: Producers of preservatives and preservative
components; producers of treated and untreated wood products; end
users of treated wood; engineers, architects and building code officials;
government entities, academia, and other groups with a general interest
in wood preservation. AWPA's Standards are universally specified
for wood preservation in the USA, and are recognized worldwide.
