President's Message

Ken Laughlin,
President

HLPA has had a very positive beginning so far in 2013. With a slight increase in membership, HLPA is poised to stay involved in the projected comeback in the local construction industry across the state (see my full article as published in the recent Construction Preview on our website here). Along with improving membership, HLPA has initiated a new theme for 2013; WOOD: Solid. Enduring. Resilient. Speaking to the central foundation of why homeowners choose to build with wood in the first place, the core values remain the same.

HLPA is staying involved in your community by participating in the upcoming AWPA's 109th meeting right here in Hawaii at the Sheraton Waikiki April 28, - May 1, 2013. Several of our members will be participating in the forum "Hawaiian Builders Session". (Monday 4-29-13 at 11:00am) Hawaii is extremely important to the treated wood industry. Did you know that all structural wood elements in each building in Hawaii must be treated? Or that due to its climate and the presence of the Formosan subterranean termite, Hawaii provides an ideal location for rigorous wood preservative field testing? Don't miss this important technical conference which will focus on field testing and Formosan termites, including a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit a working treated wood field test site and a Formosan termite laboratory with hands-on demonstrations of how test samples are evaluated. If you've ever wondered how treated wood products are tested and evaluated, then you need to take part in AWPA's first ever Hawaii meeting in its 109 year history. Find out about registering here at: http://www.awpa.com/meetings/annual/hawaii.asp.

Stay tuned this year to the HLPA as we are looking forward to a much improved year in the building industry, and for interest in the HLPA please visit our website at www.HawaiiLumber.com.

HLPA Members Come Together
Armstrong Builders Lead Maui DHHL Project

Armstrong Builders took lead as the head contractor of three housing projects on Maui in a partnership with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL). The three subdivisions located on the Kula, Hikina and Waiehu Kou homestead lands consisted of 26 wood-framed homes.

Hawaii Lumber Products Association (HLPA) members came together to help complete the job. The lumber used was supplied by Honsador and shipped to Hawaii by Sause Bros. The lumber was treated by Honolulu Wood Treating to protect it from fungal decay and termites and other pests.

"It's really great to see HLPA members working together as a team to do a great job for the DHHL," shared Ken Laughlin, president of HLPA. "It illustrates that as a community, the lumber industry in Hawaii can showcase the power, beauty and sustainability of building with wood."
