The American Wood-Preservers' Association (AWPA) is a nonprofit organization which is responsible for promulgating voluntary wood preservation standards. AWPA Standards are developed by its technical committees in an open, consensus-based process that involves individuals from all facets of wood preservation: Producers of preservatives and preservative components; producers of treated and untreated wood products; end users of treated wood; engineers, architects and building code officials; government entities, academia, and other groups with a general interest in wood preservation. AWPA's Standards are universally specified for wood preservation in the USA, and are recognized worldwide.

Boron compounds offer some of the most effective and versatile wood preservative systems available today. They combine the properties of broad-spectrum efficacy and low acute mammalian toxicity. Oxides of boron, the active ingredients in boron systems, are ubiquitous within the environment, are essential plant micronutrients and are added regularly to agricultural land as fertilizers.

There's no reason a wood structure can't last virtually forever - or, at least hundreds of years, far longer than we may actually need the building. With a good understanding of how to protect wood from decay and fire, we can expect today's wood buildings to be around for as long as we wish.
